Hour of Code

Did you know that coding is being called the “new literacy” for students? Computer science develops students’ computational and critical thinking skills and shows them how to create, not simply use, new technologies. This fundamental knowledge is needed to prepare students for the 21st century, regardless of their ultimate field of study or occupation.

Anybody can learn how to code. In an effort to promote this idea, code.org has put together the “Hour of Code.” They are asking people to take one hour to learn about the basics of coding through fun and simple tutorials. To earn this badge, you must complete your Hour of Code.

Ways to Use Coding for Teaching and Learning

Students are introduced to computer science through hour of code.  Many math concepts can be introduced, reviewed and applied through coding. See link to see how to incorporate computer science into your curriculum:  http://code.org/educate/curriculum

Common Core Integration

Students can use hour of code to demonstrate understanding of mathematical concepts, as well as many technology literacy standards which are part of the Iowa Core 21st century standards.

Earn Your Badge!

Go to code.org and choose a tutorial that looks interesting to you. Each tutorial has several puzzles for you to solve. Once you have completed all the puzzles, you will be awarded a certificate like the one pictured below. You must submit your certificate to earn this badge.
